2 lbs beef stew meat (brisket or chuck), cut into chunks
1 cup dried beans (kidney, navy, or mixed), soaked overnight
1 cup pearl barley
4 large potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
1 onion, chopped
4 garlic cloves, minced
4 whole eggs (in shell, optional but traditional)
2 tbsp paprika
1 tsp black pepper
Salt to taste
2 tbsp oil or schmaltz (rendered chicken fat)
6 cups beef or vegetable broth
Optional: 1 smoked bone or kishke (stuffed sausage casing)
